Gardening Tips for August and September
The warm weather of August is a breeding ground for pests and diseases such as Aphids, powdery mildew and slugs. Roses are susceptible, but the correct feeding and watering of all plants will encourage resistance. Unusual leaf colour in plants is often a sign of nutrient deficiency, spraying with pesticides should clear the Aphid and Mildew problem.
Slugs like lush green foliage. Holes in leaves of plants such as Hosta are evidence of the pest, beer traps or pellets may be a suitable prevention.
Continue weeding in the garden as seedlings of weeds will be sprouting. Notice any unusual plants that have taken hold. I have been encountering Japanese Knot weed infestations. This requires professional advice and treatment.
Young ash trees should be checked for unusual symptoms as the Forestry Commission have identified a new disease causing die back that requires attention.
Pruning of rambling roses, dead heading roses and clipping back of non-mature lavenders will ensure compact and flowering shrubs. Take care when dealing with the pruning of euphorbia and rhue as the sap will cause skin reactions at this time of year.
Deciduous hedge cutting may take place now as growth of hedges slows.
August brings the last month for lawn weed killing and feeding. Mow lawns at the summer height, water during dry spells. Leave the cuttings on the lawn during dry weather to retain moisture levels. September brings the start of the autumn lawn renovation and new lawn creation. Cut heights are raised; autumn feeds, scarification, aeration and top dressings procedures are to be considered. Find out more about our lawn care services.
September also brings the start of planting out container shrubs, evergreen shrubs can also be moved. Climbing roses can be pruned back and old wood cleaned out if flowering has faded. Feeding programmes on containerised stock should stop to avoid soft growth pre the winter months. Bulb planting programmes such as spring daffodils are to be started.
Sedum plants are a favourite this month. Enjoy the garden!
